Tips to Help Someone Stop Smoking

You quit and were able to stay quit for a couple of days. But then you relapsed.

This is the typical picture of someone who wanted to quit smoking- they quit and relapse because of the various excuses that commonly plague and urge them to get back to his old habits.

If you know someone- maybe your dad, a friend, your officemate- you might consider helping him quit his habit. Because almost all smokers can find all reason to quit but they could not execute the act because it is something that cant be done alone on most cases. They need help and assistance and these two might come nowhere but you.

Here, we have prepared some tips to help someone you know stop smoking. These have worked so many, many times before and we are hoping that it would work for you and the smoker you wanted to help.

Help him seek professional help- be at his side for support and help him stay quit. But for both of you to effectively dodge away from the urges of the habit, you will need some professional help. Lots of professionals have perfected ways to help people quit smoking altogether. Be sure to pay a visit to your local health advisor, physician or specialist.

Encourage him and contribute willpower- Willpower is something that is largely dependent on the person- the source. But effective people could help contribute to the source without having to exhaust themselves. Simple words of encouragement or manners that will help the smoker realize that someone is looking out for him or is constantly behind his back for support will help the smoker deal with his feat a lot easier than when he is alone.

Besides, it would make him feel guilty- which is a good thing for a smoker- to get another stick and forget every struggle that he and his supporter has been through just to help him stay quit of the addiction. Willpower is also very valuable to the smoker since it would keep him guarded from the temptations of his addiction. As we all know, when something is addicted to a certain substance- in his case nicotine which by the way is a very powerful drug- it is understandable that he would find it hard to turn his back from the thing that makes him physically dependent.

Help him understand what to expect- Someone who is hooked to cigarettes, say he is a 30-a-day smoker or 60-a-day smoker, will find quitting a very terrible experience. Because his body is already used to the actions the nicotine does to his body, it is understandable that it would continuously find ways to send the signal that urges someone to smoker. He would begin to feel increasingly uncomfortable unless he would smoke another pack. He would begin to feel distracted or his body and brain would start to feel the need for nicotine. And this is the best time that someone stands beside him to keep the greedy parasite at bay.

Additionally, the initial days of quitting are normally the hardest. It is often difficult to give up something that you have become accustomed to. Maybe it is not the cigarette itself but the habit that your friend normally associates with smoking. Without one component of his daily actions, he might find his succeeding days hollow. So be sure to watch for signs for his body's want for cigarettes for the first few days and help him find excellent diversions.

Make him realize why he wants to quit- Nearly all smokers have planned to quit sometime in their smoking career as much as all heavyweights wanted to shed off some fat on every occasion they could find. But not everyone has the courage to start or at least find the drive to stay quit for as long as his end of life. So maybe, giving him the reasons why he should quit would work if everything else did not. Sometimes, the effectiveness of a quit smoking plan lies in the personal realization of the smoker and this might occur from his own understanding of the risks caused by smoking.

You may see that helping someone quit smoking is really hard but understand that it is harder on his part because it is not only the physical dependency that both of you should expect to battle with- there are also crucial concerns such as psychological aspects of smoking and the emotional trials that would follow after.
